I Forgot About This Kitchen Until I Drove Past The House Again
I was headed through Lithia not too long ago and happened to drive past this neighborhood.
It made me think about this kitchen.
Kind of funny what sticks with you.
It wasn't the biggest remodel we've ever done. It wasn't the most expensive one either. Honestly, if you lined up every kitchen we've worked on over the years, this one probably wouldn't stand out to anybody else.
But I remember it.
The homeowners had lived with the old kitchen for a long time. You could tell because nothing in it was actually broken. It had just reached that point where everything felt...tired.
Not ugly.
Just tired.
I remember opening one cabinet door while we were talking. It didn't slam. It didn't fall off.
It just had that loose feeling old cabinets get after years of being opened every single day.
Funny the things your brain hangs onto.
We started tearing everything out a couple days later.
If you've never watched a kitchen remodel happen, it's honestly kind of a mess for a while.
Dust ends up where you didn't think dust could get.
Everybody suddenly forgets where they put things.
There was a tape measure sitting on the countertop most of the morning.
Well...
It wasn't actually the countertop anymore.
Just plywood where the countertop used to be.
One of the guys kept setting his coffee down in the exact same spot every morning even after the cabinets were gone. I don't think he even realized he was doing it.
Habits are weird.
Somewhere around the middle of the project, I walked outside to grab something from the trailer.
When I came back in, I stopped for a second.
Not because anything huge had happened.
It just finally looked like a different kitchen.
Sometimes that's how remodeling works.
You don't notice the changes while they're happening.
Then all of a sudden the old room is gone.
The homeowner stopped by after work one afternoon.
She didn't walk around pointing at things.
Didn't pull out her phone.
Didn't even say much.
She just leaned against the doorway for a minute and looked around.
Finally, she smiled and said,
"I can actually picture Christmas in here now."
That was it.
Not countertops.
Not cabinets.
Christmas.
For whatever reason, that's the part I remember most.
Maybe because that's really why people remodel kitchens.
It's usually not about having newer cabinets.
It's about making a room where everybody naturally ends up.
The place where somebody is making coffee before work.
Where kids dump their backpacks after school.
Where everybody somehow ends up standing around the island instead of sitting in the living room.
That's what this kitchen became.
