This Tampa House Had Been in the Family for Years
This one stuck with me for a reason.
The homeowner told us pretty early that she'd inherited the house from her mom.
She wasn't trying to build a brand-new house.
She just wanted it to feel like hers.
There's a difference.
The kitchen got talked about the most
I think we spent more time standing in the kitchen than anywhere else.
Not measuring.
Talking.
She pointed at one wall and said, "My mom wouldn't recognize this place when we're done."
Then she smiled.
I wasn't really sure if she meant that as a good thing or not.
A minute later she laughed and said, "She'd probably tell me I spent too much money."
That answered my question.
The house had been lived in
You could tell.
There were little things everywhere.
Old paint lines where pictures had hung for years.
A cabinet door that didn't quite shut anymore.
I noticed somebody had written a phone number inside one of the pantry cabinets years ago.
No idea whose it was.
Nobody erased it while we were there.
Every room needed something
This wasn't a kitchen remodel where you close one door and forget about the rest of the house.
Pretty much every room needed attention.
Some needed a lot more than others.
Funny how every time we'd finish one room and walk into the next, somebody would say, "Well...now this room looks old."
That's kind of how whole home remodels go.
The kitchen looked completely different
By the end, if you hadn't seen the house before, you probably wouldn't know it was the same kitchen.
Cleaner.
Brighter.
Worked a lot better.
We were loading the trailer when she came outside one last time.
Didn't say much.
Just looked back toward the front door for a second.
People do that sometimes.
I don't ask why.
Probably because they don't really know either.
Anyway...
We packed up and headed home.
